Dwarf Alberta spruce (Picea glauca 'conica') prebonsai; summer Feb 2017. My 6-yo daughter is probably still traumatised after seeing what I did to her Christmas tree 😂 In my defense, her little tree was not likely to ever recover its perfect conical shape after being scorched to a crisp on one side during a summer heatwave 2 Christmases ago. It has hung on since then with new growth on the 'good' side but post bonsai obsession, I've decided to give it a makeover. There wasn't much to work with as it's a young tree, maybe just over 3 years? Removed an unexpected twin trunk and all but its strongest lateral branches and wired what were left downwards. This 'Christmas Star' potted cultivar is sold here every Dec. It's relatively hardy but doesn't recover easily from defoliation, so I was pleased to see new shoots and even some back budding only a month after surgery. I'm feeding it heavily so let's see how it fills out. Current height is about 60cm, will shorten it in the future.
