We would like to congratulate our client Tom Kelly on his PR deadlift. Tom pulled 315x5. While running his LP he has put on a substantial amount of weight and gained a lot of strength through the process.

When John started training with us, he struggled to do a full squat with just his bodyweight. To be blunt, John was weak. Now a few months later, he's added over 160 pounds to his squat along with high increases in his other lifts.

Why does that matter? Above all, it's made his job far easier. As a nurse at one of Chicago's busiest hospitals, constantly moving patients during ten-hour shifts took its toll on his back and his energy. A stronger squat and deadlift translates to a stronger body and makes the tasks at the hospital less demanding and eliminated his back problems. Those shifts don't leave him fatigued like they used to.

It takes zero talent to develop your strength. What it does take is patience and perseverance, and John's a perfect example of that. Here's a video of John passing the "two-plate" milestone -- 225 pounds -- in the deadlift after starting at 95 pounds just a couple months ago. .

Our client Neal Starbird pulled a lifetime PR deadlift of 380 lbs at last weekends USAPL novice meet. The PR came just 4 weeks after running a personal best time in a 5k so we had to put together a truncated program for the meet. Despite the short prep time Neal managed to tie his PR squat along with this PR deadlift. Oh, and he weighed in 10 lbs lighter than his last meet.

71 year-old Steve Hegerfeld came to our most recent training camp to refine his squats. A lifelong athlete, Steve began developing his physical strength with the Starting Strength model a couple years ago after reading Jonathan Sullivan's article "Barbell Training is Big Medicine." At the camp, Steve worked up to three perfectly executed sets of five reps with 225 pounds -- this was a light training session for him. He's another great example that it's never too late to start training and that you can get stronger at any age!

Shannon Kirby deadlifts 185 pounds for an easy set of 3 reps. So far, Shannon has added 100 pounds to her deadlift since she began training a few months ago. She's also added 100 pounds to her squat -- how's that for progress?

Strength is the most important general physical adaptation. All other physical capacities like power, balance, coordination and even endurance depend on a person's ability to produce force against an external resistance. Every single task you encounter on a daily basis, just living your life, depends to a varying degree on your ability or lack thereof to produce force.
Ms. Fox began training with us this spring. Yesterday she turned 88 years young. Today she pressed a lifetime personal best of 22.5 pounds for a triple and deadlifted a lifetime personal best of 88 pounds for a double. Earlier in the week she squatted 25 pounds for three sets of three. None of this was even remotely possible when she started. The acquisition of strength from the basic barbell lifts has had a dramatic impact on her daily tasks. She stands easily from a seated position without assistance. Hangs laundry on a line without arm fatigue. Unloads 50 pound bags of mulch. All specific tasks that improved with general strength. @startingstrength adapted for age and recovery. Anyone can get stronger. Everyone should get stronger. #startingstrength #startingstrengthcoach #startingstrengthgym #westminsterstrengthandconditioning #deadlift #noexcuses

@karlssc dropping knowledge during yesterday's Starting Strength Training Camp on the squat. We had attendees from as far as St. Louis and Salt Lake City. Dave hit 315 for 2 sets of 5 today after a PR set of 3 at 345. Three years ago, he had trouble just squatting the bar. He's come a long way through a simple combination of effort and persistence. Dave sets a great example to follow.

There are 3 criteria that should be fulfilled when picking exercises for your strength program. 1. Pick the exercise that allows you to use the greatest amount of weight 2. Pick the exercise that is going to use the most muscle mass 3. Pick the exercise that will allow you to use the most EFFECTIVE range of motion. #Kratos #Startingstrength #Lowbar #kneesout #Conventionaldeadlift #dontforgettopress #Chicago #Doyourfives #strength #fitness #gym #fitfam #chiraq #jailhousestrong
